“Identity and Belonging” University Documentary Competition 2017

The Stories of Guanajuato

The goal of the the “Identity and Belonging” University Documentary Competition is to promote new generations of storytellers in Guanajuato, restless to tell us of their traditions and those of their communities.

It consists of making a documentary short film that strengthens regional identity and a belonging to a land rich in history into our youth; a film that reflect their interests, expectations and concerns. To develop these short films, GIFF, along with its sponsors and friends, offers film workshops to the participating teams.

The work of the young people who have participated in this contest has crossed borders by having their documentaries screened at internationsl festivals and platforms.

Noches de Teatro (Theater Nights)

Synopsis: Ivanna Tovar reflects on her daily life, her struggle and her dreams as a young transgendered woman in Guanajuato while she directs Nights of Cabaret, a play she also stars in.

Peloteros (Ballers)

Director: Luis Ernesto Pérez

University: Universidad de Celaya

City: Celaya, Guanajuato

Synopsis: An old-time player shows us that Baseball in the “Rincón de Tamayo” community is a great example of how passion for a sport can create identity in a town and even unite people from adjoining communities.

Éxodo (Exodus)

Director: Erick Rodríguez

University: Universidad de Guanajuato Campus Irapuato-Salamanca

City: Salamanca, Guanajuato

Synopsis: Éxodo is a documentary that shows how parties happen in Mexico. A traditional party follows a series of events and specific rules that are carried out by the people who are a part of the celebration

Escaramuza de Palo (Skirmish)

Director: Lilian Gutierrez

University: Universidad Tecnológica del Suroeste de Guanajuato

City: Valle de Santiago, Guanajuato.

Synopsis: A woman from Valle de Santiago shows us the passion, discipline and tradition that goes into building skirmishes. Those who dedicate their lives passionately to this tradition that is slowly fading.

¡Rudísimo! (Rough!)

Director: Martín Rodríguez

University: Universidad De La Salle Bajío

City: León, Guanajuato

Synopsis: ¡Rudísimo! tells the story of three wrestlers: old school-er El Chale, and two young wrestlers, El Último Halcón Azteca and Murder Kai, who are just starting out in this colorful, yet dangerous sport. Both sides will face their most important battle: the past versus the future.

Coroneo

Director: Carolina Ramírez

University: Universidad de Estudios Profesionales de Ciencias y Artes

City: León, Guanajuato

Synopsis: The work and life of two craftsmen from Coroneo, Guanajuato. They dedicate their time to this activity which is a symbol of the city.
